Elgon has chosen to support COOPI and a project targeting some 2,500 women in Sierra Leone and their communities. Objective: to promote training and knowledge sharing to foster greater participation of women in decision-making processes and to build a better future for the people of Sierra Leone.
Why Sierra Leone?
A small country in West Africa known for great and dramatic stories - slave trade, diamond war, Ebola - Sierra Leone still remains one of the poorest countries in the world. In particular, the civil war that lasted from 1991 to 2002 brought, along with horror and poverty, the need to make women more autonomous than in the past, so that they could work and support their families and communities, taking the place of the men who had been killed or maimed by the war.
This is why COOPI focused its intervention on food security and the production and marketing of cashew nuts, which represent an important opportunity to achieve economic autonomy.
Today, after working with its customers to donate 1,000 seedlings and involving 400 women in training activities, Elgon is helping to disseminate the skills acquired, with a campaign that aims to donate kilometres to travel from village to village and share experiences: #sharethefuture.
By choosing Elgon products, professionals and customers choose to help COOPI in this mission that can concretely give a better future to many women, families, communities.
